Professional coding is still the best way to work

With a lot of companies promoting their business online, and the vast amount of Content Management Systems available at the click of a button – it is a very difficult choice on who you decide to use, to promote your business digitally.

So if you are a customer with no web design or coding experience, then you could probably say that best solution is either WordPress or Wix. If you’re after an eCommerce shop, then Shopify would be your best solution.

But if you want a professional looking website with no design restrictions, brilliant optimisation and security – there is still no better way to build it, than learning to code the website yourself, or hiring a professional Web Designer and Developer.

Question Mark

So why do Clients prefer to build their own website, if they don't have the experience?

It is a control thing. When it is a complex printed piece of work like a brochure, they are happy for the Designer to do the work, because they have no idea about paginations and making sure that it is artwork-ready.

Because the website is digital, they can have full control over the website. So if there are doing constant updates to the web content, they can save a fortune by not employing a Web Designer / Developer to do the updates.

Unfortunately, there are downsides to building a website yourself, without learning any code, or not commissioning a Web Designer / Developer.

So listed below, are reason’s why not to use WordPress, compared to hiring a professional.

Design bad

Restricted Design

WordPress originally started out as a platform just for creating Blogs. But years down the line, WordPress expanded its capability for building full websites, using Themes.

This would give the customer the ability to create a website without ever needing to employ a Web Designer, or even having to learn a single line of code.

The huge disadvantage to this, is that you are very restricted to the original theme template that you were using. Thus giving your website a “not so premium, or unique look”. So if you are a Freelance Designer (like myself), or an Agency owner, you may be disappointed with the final result of your website.

So why use a professional Web Designer or Developer?

By employing a professional, you will have FULL customisation, to suit your brand needs.
Mobile Phone Bad

They look and perform bad on Mobile

The first rule of Web Design nowadays – is design for Mobile first, then Desktop afterwards. Not the other way around. The reason for this, is because over 70% of websites nowadays are first viewed on Mobile. Especially eCommerce sites like Amazon or eBay.

This same rule should also apply to your own business website. Whether your are a Freelance Photographer, a Retail Shop owner, or a Business Executive.

Anyway, getting back on point. I’ve seen a fair amount of WordPress built websites, that look okay on Desktop, but look and perform really bad on Mobile.

Take a look at the below examples:

This was for a website that a Client was building themselves in WordPress. I was only involved in providing image assets.

This example look like the result, of some bad Javascript animation, or just the result of bringing in a custom widget from another source.

Here the logo looks completely distorted, due to lack of image optimisation, when you drop hi-res images into your WordPress website.

So this lack of optimisation also does not take into account for loading times on different device sizes such as Mobile or Tablet, which can be a disastrous user experience for the customer, when they are using 4G, or even 3G. Hence moving away from your website, and shopping elsewhere.

So why use a professional Web Designer or Developer?

By employing a professional, your website will be designed for mobile first, and each optimised image will be imported into your website, at each device size (e.g. Desktop, Desktop Retina, Tablet and Mobile). Therefore the customer having a fast and pleasant user experience.

The above is an example of how I set up each image in Photoshop, before exporting to an optimised JPEG or PNG. Not only is it set up for each device size (Desktop, Tablet and Mobile), but also how many columns the image will be spread across.
Bad functionality

Functionality

WordPress websites, are basically made up from plugins that other developers have created. So the more plugins that a customer installs on their own website, the slower the website will perform and decrease loading times.

Question Mark

So why use a professional Web Designer or Developer?

By employing a professional, each page will be manually coded, and plugin-free.
Security

Security

WordPress may be the most popular CMS to use, but it is also probably one of the most widely targeted CMS websites by hackers and spammers. Even downloading security plugins from WordPress, will not guarantee your safety from security hacks. In fact even using other people’s plugins or themes could even expose you to a cyber attack.

So why use a professional Web Designer or Developer?

By employing a professional, your website will have the best SSL security installed, from the safest Web Hosting provider.
Poor SEO

Poor SEO

WordPress positions itself to be very SEO-friendly. Though it has to automatically optimise your website and improve your search ranks, WordPress gives you only the basic optimisation. If you want to boost your website, you have to download special SEO plugins, which as we know slows down the loading speed of your project.

Question Mark

So why use a professional Web Designer or Developer?

By employing a professional, your website will have the description of your business embedded into the HTML code, without the need for SEO plugins. Therefore your website successfully reaching out to many people on Google.
Not cost-effective

Not very cost-effective

WordPress is designed to cut out the middle-man (the Web Designer or the Developer), that is in between the Client and the website.

The biggest problem here is, that the Client does not have any knowledge of UX or optimisation. So in the end, they will still need to hire the professional to sort out the mess that they built. Basically delaying the inevitable, and costing the Client more money, before the professional has even started the project. Basically like creating a fine art painting, over someone elses work on the same canvas.

So why use a professional Web Designer or Developer?

By employing a professional, the Client will have the best, and most confident support possible, for building websites.

Conclusion

So by choosing WordPress, you may think that you are getting a huge money-saving website. But when you dig deep into the popular Content Management System, you start to see the disadvantages between building yourself, and hiring a professional. Concluding that it is not really a money-saver after all.

Word Press

So If you are the kind of person who is quite easy to please, don't mind the laggy loading times, and is not willing to commit any time or money to professional quality work – then stick with WordPress.

Web code
But if you are someone, who wants a more professional and premium wesbite, with fast loading times, and happy for a professional to do all of the content updates – then choosing the Web Designer / Developer is a no-brainer.
